Keepers of the Fire: WATER took place at Fort Point, a Civil War-era fort located under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Organized by For-Site Foundation and curated by Veronica Roberts. All photos by Lenny Gonzales unless otherwise noted.

Readings about water included writers Rosanna Xia (pictured), Amanda Moore, Joel Pomeranz, Bonnie Tsui, and curator Veronica Roberts.

Hughen/Starkweather glass and sand installation Pipe Dreams references dowsing tools — tree branches, pendulums, copper rods, and other tools used for centuries to find water in places where there is not enough.

The artists collected sand from beaches near Fort Point for their site-specific installation. Fort Point is located at the mouth of the Golden Gate between the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay, the largest estuary on the West Coast of the United States.
